What are Semi Precious Gemstones?

When trying to decide what piece of jewelry to purchase, there are many things you might consider: size of the piece, metal type, metal color. But, perhaps the most important aspect to your jewelry is the main gemstone, often the centerpiece to the item you are purchasing. These gemstones can come in varied shapes, colors and sizes. Typically we hear them described as Precious or Semi Precious gemstones, but what is the real difference?

This distinction started back in the Victorian Era when gemstones were separated by value. The idea of separation by value is still somewhat held up today, but with a few inconsistencies. Typically you’ll see these four gemstones described as precious:

  • Diamonds
  • Sapphires
  • Rubies
  • Emeralds

These four stones are the generally the most popular gems that come to mind when we think of jewelry. For example, most married couples have a diamond ring, thanks to DeBeers and their famous ‘A Diamond is Forever’ catchphrase.

But, these four are not always the most valuable. Yes, you’ll typically see higher prices for diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, but if you follow any top auction house, you’ll see Natural Pearls and spinels garner high value as well.

Outside of these top four gemstones, everything else is considered semi precious. As we discussed, the value aspect really doesn’t play into this distinction anymore as we see many semi precious that are worth quite a lot of money.

Here is a list of some of our favorite semi precious stones:

  • Citrine
  • Morganite
  • Turquoise
  • Topaz
  • Peridot
  • Garnet

There is no scientific difference between precious and semi precious. For example, an emerald is from the mineral species beryl, as is morganite. Emeralds are considered precious, but a morganite is semi precious.

When you are considering purchasing a piece of jewelry, we suggest not overthinking the precious versus semi precious debate. Think about what colors you like, what colors you like to wear. Does this piece fit into my style and will it bring me joy? That’s the real precious nature of jewelry, the feelings you get when you adorn yourself with beautiful pieces you love!
